F Marks the Spot

Upon completion of your sabbatical, having read every Booker Prize recipient and NYT Best seller, mastered a second, third or fourth language, lowered your blood pressure by 20 points and slept more than you have since incubating in your Mother’s womb, you are ready to tackle your biggest challenge to date….employment.

You can’t exactly update your Linked In account with Club Fed details, nor will you be able to complete any employment contracts without answering a question about The Scarlet F.

Your best course of action is to embrace your new status.  Wear it like a badge of honor.  Many will be curious about your staycay, use this to your advantage in engaging people in conversation that could lead to an assignment.

You have already taken responsibility for your actions, presumably made amends and expressed great remorse.  Now is not the time to wallow in self pity.  Now is the time to surge forward with phase 2 of your life.

Is there something you have always wanted to do/explore as a career?  Perhaps you want to develop your cooking skills?  The Food Industry is accepting of applicants with The Scarlet F.

Thoughts of the kitchen repulse you?  What about using your hands in construction?  There are positions in back office as well as “on the ground” opportunities.

Food and Construction Industries aside, consider starting your own business.

WCC’s are not content to sit back and relax.  Why not explore an opportunity that germinated during your many hours of contemplation. Make it a reality.  Put together a Business Plan and discuss with your trusted colleagues.

The reality is that The Scarlet F severely limits one’s ability to obtain a traditional WCC position.  Regardless of whether or not you need to “check the box” on an employment application, a basic googling of your name or background check will bring up your history.  It’s best to be up front and honest.

Given this fact, WCC’s need to be creative in repackaging themselves and forthcoming in assessing their strengths and weaknesses.

Perhaps the years of sailing and tennis lessons could lead one to organize a youth sports training program?

Self employment is a great avenue.  You are your own boss (no box to check), you can utilize your own resources or you can partner with trusted family members/friends in growing a concept to fruition.

Be realistic.  If your idea of job security is creating a Reality Show and you envision yourself a star on the E! Network then your prescription dose needs to be re-evaluated.
