July 2018 Outreach
Wrote a letter to Matthew Cooke thanking him for his efforts in support of Criminal Justice Reform. Included in the packet was a copy of The White Collar Club Handbook and an article I wrote stressing the need for Criminal Justice Reform and Second Chances in The Huffington Post. Matthew wrote and directed the documentary film Survivors Guide to Prison in which former inmates, officers and celebrities critique the U.S. prison system.
“Survivors Guide to Prison is a 2018 documentary film directed by Matthew Cooke exploring the United States prison system, largely through the lens of two wrongly convicted men, Reggie Cole and Bruce Lisker. The film, narrated by Cooke and Susan Sarandon, focuses on problems one might face against the prison system via segments covering topics such as plea bargains, solitary confinement, and the difficulties of life after prison. The movie features interviews with former prison inmates, police officers, court officials, lawyers, and journalists, as well as many appearances by celebrities such as Danny Glover, B-Real, Macklemore, Deepak Chopra, RZA, Busta Rhymes, Quincy Jones, Tom Morello, Wayne Kramer, Ice T, and Danny Trejo. Some of the celebrities interviewed are themselves former prison inmates. The film was executive produced by Adrian Grenier and Susan Sarandon.”

New York based Criminal Defense Attorney, Ryan G Blanch, reached out to me to assist a woman who would be self surrendering to Alderson FPC in a week’s time. I immediately responded and scheduled a call to speak with her and her worried family. In a 1.5 hr call I attempted to answer all of their questions and calm their nerves. I then followed up with a number of emails addressing what to expect, what to bring, visitation hours, etc. any and everything that I could think of to assist them. I also reached out to people IN Alderson FPC to meet the woman when she arrives and located 3 people that spoke her native language (Russian). I will continue to assist her and her family through her entry and tenure at Alderson.
